Mentafy Research Report
Evasion-as-a-Service
How a subscription industry of "AI humanizers" openly markets the bypass of Turnitin, GPTZero and Originality.ai — and what it means for academic integrity.
01Executive summary
A mature, explicit commercial market now exists for circumventing AI and plagiarism detection. At least fifteen well-funded humanizer and "bypass" services actively operate, most priced at $9.99 to $30 per month, many serving millions of users, and most overtly naming the detectors they claim to defeat — Turnitin, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Copyleaks, ZeroGPT, Winston AI — directly in their marketing copy.
The category has evolved past euphemism. Many sites list "Bypass Originality.ai Turbo 3.0," or "Remove ChatGPT Watermarks" as plan features on pricing pages. Several offer money-back guarantees if a user's text is flagged — effectively selling evasion as a warrantied service. Testimonials celebrate academic use openly: "It saved my GPA" (BypassGPT); "over one million students' work remain undetected" (HIX Bypass). This is not a gray-area workaround industry. It is evasion-as-a-service.
"Humanize your essays with HIX Bypass and you teacher will never have a chance to flag your writing as AI-generated even if write it yourself." — HIX Bypass, product landing page (original typography preserved)

04Honorable mentions
Two journalists have done a tremendous job for years to document this industry in public. Mentafy recommends both.
The Cheat Sheet — Derek Newton thecheatsheet.substack.com
Twice-weekly Substack by a veteran integrity journalist (Forbes contributor; bylines in The Washington Post, The Atlantic, USA Today). Newton is the most consistent public critic of humanizer tools — he famously compared them to luminol, useful only for hiding wrongdoing. After his reporting, Grammarly confirmed it would stop labeling humanized text as "Typed by a Human" in its Authorship feature. Recent issues have covered the NBC News humanizer investigation and the emergence of autonomous "coursework-submission" agents.
This Isn't Fine — Joseph Thibault thisisntfine.substack.com
Founder of Cursive Technology and an 18-year edtech veteran. Thibault's flagship Takedowns series provides step-by-step instructions for reporting specific cheating ads on Google Ads Transparency, Meta Ad Library, and Reddit. His reporting has directly contributed to platform enforcement — including the Reddit ban of a major essay-mill subreddit in February 2026. He also maintains an Essay Mill Database of 500+ sites.
05Supporting statistics (2024–2026)

- Tyton Partners, Time for Class 2025 (US): 42% of students use generative AI weekly or daily; only 28% of institutions have a formal AI policy.

- Turnitin internal research: detectors miss more than 25% of AI-rephrased text before a humanizer layer is applied.
- Undetectable AI: ~15M users in early 2025; self-reports 23.1M in 2026.
- UK Guardian: UK universities logged ~7,000 proven AI-misconduct cases in 2023–24 — more than triple the prior year.
- Scarfe et al., PLOS ONE (2024): AI-generated exam work went undetected in 94% of blind "Turing Test" submissions at a UK university.
06How Mentafy S³ responds
The vendors documented above all operate on the same principle: rewrite the surface of a text — swap words, shuffle structure — until a string-matching or stylometric detector loses the scent. S³ (Semantic Source Search) is built for a different contest. It does what experienced reviewers do intuitively — reads for meaning, not for matching words — and it does so at scale, on every submission.
1. Semantic embedding
Text is analysed not as a string of characters, but as a vector of meaning. Synonyms and structural rewordings remain visible because the underlying idea has not moved.
2. Global section analysis
S³ compares paragraphs and chains of argument — not just individual sentences. That is the level at which humanizers operate, and therefore the level at which they give themselves away: structure, sequence, and density of content align even after the words have been shuffled.
3. Source alignment and evidence
When S³ identifies a passage, it assigns the original source and places the submission and source directly side-by-side. Educators see what was borrowed — not just a percentage number, but the passage and its original, together, with the reasoning visible.
The tools catalogued above are priced by the month. S³ makes that subscription worthless — and gives students a better reason to do their own work: because this time, their own thinking is what shows up on the page.

This report is based on primary-source review of the public landing pages, pricing pages, FAQs, testimonials, blog posts, Chrome Web Store listings, and app-store listings of the named vendors, together with secondary-source reporting from NBC News, The Guardian, Derek Newton's The Cheat Sheet, Joseph Thibault's This Isn't Fine, HEPI / Kortext 2025, Digital Education Council, Tyton Partners' and Time for Class 2025. Quotations are reproduced verbatim from the source pages as of April 2026; any grammatical errors are those of the original publisher. Where a vendor's wording has since changed, earlier language was captured during the research window and is noted as such.
Mentafy is a plagiarism- and authorship-detection company and therefore has a commercial interest in the conclusions of this report. We have nonetheless restricted our claims to quotations and figures that a reader can independently verify at the cited sources.
