Plagiarism Software, That Detects AI-Paraphrasing

Legacy plagiarism checks find copy&paste texts. Mentafy will indicate a source, even if an AI-Tool has paraphrased the full text.

Plagiarism Checker Result: Mentafy integrity report showing a classic plagiarism match and a semantic AI paraphrasing match with 87% similarity.

THE PROBLEM

Thirty seconds are enough

Free AI paraphrasers are everywhere. Paste in text, rephrase it, submit it – and the classic plagiarism checker finds no match. That is the para-plagiarism problem.

AI-Paraphrasing bypasses two checking tools in one step.

Anyone who runs someone else’s text through what is also called a text spinner, can produce an output that is not reliably detected by either traditional plagiarism checkers or AI detectors. Two detection tools bypassed. One tool. Zero effort.

A systematic review of 189 studies (Frontiers in Computer Science, 2025) reaches a clear conclusion: lexical methods fail precisely when it comes to paraphrased plagiarism. Research on “machine-paraphrased plagiarism” describes this as a “serious threat” to academic integrity.

members of higher education institutions are convinced that AI is being misused at their institution and is weakening the capacity for critical thinking. (AAC&U & Elon University, 2026)

Semantic Source Search - What's behind it

S³ does what experienced reviewers do intuitively: it reads for meaning, not just for matching words — and it does so at scale for every submission.
  1. Semantic Embedding:The text is analysed not as a string of characters, but as a vector of meaning. Synonyms and structural rewordings remain visible.
  2. Global section analysis: S³ compares paragraphs and chains of argument – not just individual sentences. Where do structure, sequence, and density of content align?
  3. Source alignment & evidence: When S³ identifies a passage, it assigns the original source and places the submission and source directly side by side.
Mentafy semantic source search comparing a rewritten student submission with the original source and highlighting paraphrased matching passages.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Plagiarism Software

What is the difference between classic plagiarism and para-plagiarism?

Traditional plagiarism copies text verbatim or almost verbatim. Para-plagiarism occurs when content, arguments, or structures are taken over but completely reworded — so that no wording matches anymore, even though the intellectual work is still not the author’s own.

Can S³ also distinguish between permissible paraphrases with proper citation and para-plagiarism?

S³ identifies semantically similar passages and displays the likely source. Whether a citation is present and correctly formatted is checked in parallel by the reference module. By combining both signals, a properly cited paraphrase can be clearly distinguished from para-plagiarism.

May I use an S³ match as the sole basis for sanctions?

No, and we explicitly do not recommend that. S³ provides a signal and a basis for discussion. Sanctions should always be based on the conversation with the student, the full integrity report, and the institution’s established process.

Is Mentafy GDPR and CCPA compliant?

Yes. Mentafy is fully GDPR- and CCPA-compliant. Only the data necessary for the review process is processed. You can find further details in our Privacy Policy.

Does S³ only work in English?

S³ supports multiple languages. For German, Spanish, and English, we have developed a language-specific model that delivers more reliable results than a generic approach. Additional language upgrades will follow.

What happens if I only have the final PDF — and no writing process data?

S³ and the plagiarism check work exclusively on the final text and do not require any process data. Version analysis is an additional module that provides more context, but it is not a prerequisite for an integrity review.
