Levels of AI Usage in Student Writing

Defining AI Use Levels to Support Transparent and Responsible Writing

Not all AI use is the same.
Here’s how Mentafy classifies it  in three levels.

Level 1

Human-Written

AI may support ideation but not revision or writing. Every word is written by the student or the source is cited.

This level allows the use of AI for brainstorming and idea generation only. All text must be written and revised by the student without AI support, including grammar and structure. It emphasizes original writing and critical thinking. Students are required to document how AI influenced their ideas, but the final output must reflect their unaided work.

Level 2

AI-Supported

AI may be used for ideation and revision, but the main writing remains human-made.

At this level, students write the text themselves but may use AI for feedback, language polishing, and structural improvements. This level is particularly inclusive for students with learning differences or those writing in a second language. AI can act like a writing assistant -suggesting edits, but not generating paragraphs. Documentation of how and when AI was used is required for transparency and reflection.

Level 3

AI-Coauthored

Students may use AI to write parts of the text, but remain fully responsible for its content.

This level permits the integration of AI-generated text into the student’s work. Students may use AI for drafting, expanding, or rephrasing content, as long as they actively engage with the material: reviewing, adapting, and ensuring accuracy. The student remains fully accountable for the claims, structure, and correctness of the final text. Full disclosure of AI involvement is of course also here essential for academic transparency.
