At Mentafy, our mission is to strengthen academic integrity in the age of AI. Every year, we analyze trends across thousands of uploaded texts to better understand how students and educators use our tools and how we can serve them better. We look at topics, disciplines, writing formats… the usual academic suspects.
But this year, something unexpected caught our attention: around Valentine’s Day 2025, we saw a spike in documents we couldn’t classify within our academic academies. And as we looked closer, we realized – to our delight and surprise – that hundreds of love letters had been uploaded to check for plagiarism and AI usage.
That’s right. Our academic integrity platform, designed to protect educational fairness, had become (at least briefly) a love letter analysis tool. Some users even upload photos of handwritten love letters from their phone. We’re flattered by the trust – and we get it. When it comes to romance, authenticity matters. In fact, our analysis showed that in 38% of these love letters, more than half the text exhibited AI-generated patterns. Looks like Cupid in those cases may have had digital backup… ;-). Note: We analyze patterns and aggregates, not private stories; content is handled securely/anonymized (as applicable).

While amusing, this actually underscored something important: whether in matters of the heart or the classroom, people want to know that words are genuine. Using AI to polish your writing and inspire your creativity in opening up your heart lyrically is very likely not yet considered an issue by most. What’s important is transparency about it, and that the ideas itself, you are communicating with your text, are what’s in your heart and mind.
What are common signs of AI-written love letters? Here are some hands-on indicators to identify AI-written messages:
- Way too perfect (no typos, very formal)
- Filled with clichés (“You are my light in the darkness…“)
- Lacks personal touches or memories
- … or it simply doesn’t sound like your partner at all!
Evaluating academic writing is not so different. In the AI-era, where ChatGPT can produce essays in seconds, we need smarter ways to ensure fairness and originality. That’s why Mentafy combines writing-process forensics, AI-content detection and classification together with classic plagiarism scanning to give students and teachers transparent evidence of authorship.
Want to check with algorithmic diligence if your latest love note (or assignment) is too good to be true?
No judgment (AI can be a great tool), just transparent clarity, curiosity, and maybe a laugh. After all, if your partner really love you, he/she writes it (mostly) him/herselve. Right?
Happy Valentine’s Day – and good luck out there, poets and lovebirds!
