From Southern Roots to Silicon Dreams
Growing up in the southmost province of India, amidst the choices of biology, commerce, and computer science, there emerged Hari Kizhedath, who, through a process of elimination, found an unexpected passion in Computer Science. While good grades were a norm, the real turning point came in the twelfth grade with a project to create a ticket reservation system, igniting a love for programming. This passion led to a fulfilling journey at the Government Engineering College Sreekrishnapuram, where four years of rigorous study in Computer Science and Engineering were not just academically enriching but also instrumental in forging lasting friendships.
After college, Hari moved from his hometown in Palakkad to the bustling tech hub of Bangalore. Here, his focus was on enabling customers to extend SAP’s cloud applications and on the integration between different SAP products and systems. Seeking a complete departure from the familiar, Hari made a pivotal move in 2020: to study abroad in Germany. He moved to Paderborn to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science in the middle of the Corona pandemic. This was a time of exploration of many environments and cultures, as well as a voyage of intellectual and personal development. Static analysis, the process of examining code without running it, became the focus of intense academic study.
Resonance with Mentafy
Mentafy’s mission resonated deeply with Hari: in an era dominated by AI technologies like ChatGPT, the company emphasized the crucial importance of preserving and enhancing traditional writing skills. Hari believed that the writing is seen as a vital tool for intellectual clarity and expression. His own experience writing the thesis honed his ability to reason logically and articulate thoughts clearly, showcasing the brain’s analytical process. This skill is fundamental in an increasingly automated world.
At Mentafy, the opportunity to engage in product management added another dimension to the professional experience. It provided a platform to influence the product’s direction and contribute to the company’s overall growth.
Tools and Technologies
Embracing a pragmatic approach to technology, Hari prioritizes selecting the most appropriate tools for specific tasks. He prefers JavaScript and Python for quick developments. For his personal projects, he enjoys delving into new languages and technologies. During his university years, he sought inspiration and knowledge from content creators like T3dotgg and Josh Tries Coding. Additionally, reading Hacker News provided a broader perspective on the tech industry.
Before joining Mentafy, Hari worked as a Teaching Assistant for a game theory course. Game theory, with its focus on understanding how to create situations where it’s in the players’ best interest to act in a certain way, presented Hari fascinating insights into the concept of equilibrium. This experience as a TA in game theory not only has been intellectually stimulating but also invaluable in developing a nuanced understanding of human behavior in complex systems.
Future Forward-looking
Hari is most excited about the opportunity to select and train the machine learning models. In this process, he will gain hands-on experience in understanding the strengths and limitations of various models, and how they can be applied to specific problems like detecting cheating based on user behavior. The journey of learning, experimenting, and ultimately creating a machine learning solution that can be widely used and has a tangible positive impact aligns with his belief in the importance of principles and utility in technology.
Outside Work
Living in Cologne, Hari is evidently making the most of the vibrant city life, exploring various activities such as rock climbing and concert-going. Looking ahead, he will pick up a musical instrument and reignite his passion for reading.
